The New Face of Imperialism

I was introduced to Rudyard Kipling's poem White Man's Burden in my first year human rights class. Like many of the things I learned in that class this poem shocked me. How could anyone claim that imperialist countries like the United States not only had a right to invade other countries but that they had a moral duty to do so. Yellow Bird an Siliman have demonstrated that the idea that whites must go forth and civilize the non-white world is alive and well.

  1. I think it is clean in the content the United States uses to portray the Haitians. By snapping photos of looters they are insinuating that Haitians are "primitive" beings, one again in need of the American people to "civilize" them.
